Notes & Reviews:

This excellent recording by the Boston Camerata showcases music from the new world as played on period instruments. Inspired and influence by various cultures of the new world, this recording is tribute to colonial Latin America.

Notes & Reviews:

Recording information: Lasalette Shrine, Ipswich, MA (07/1992).

Europe meets the New World in this first major recording of a bit of rediscovered music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Nueva Espana is a compilation of Spanish colonial music. While the European classical stock is predominate in the baroque style, conservative and restrained, a youthful graft, even an insolent sound, clearly has an influence. There is an unmistakable African influence as well, which has been in Spanish music since the Middle Ages. ~ MusD
