Notes & Reviews:

The arrangements for flute and guitar recorded on this CD have to be considered in view of their particular historical background. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Vienna developed into the leading center of European musical culture. Aided by an economically growing and increasingly influential bourgeoisie, an extensive concert life became established. Concerts and opera performances were central events in public life. Without the possibilities of today's media, whoever wanted to hear music beyond what was offered in concerts had to hire musicians or make music him/herself. Especially at this time, making music oneself was considered an essential part of being cultivated. The growing number of music practitioners from the bourgeoisie and aristocracy also stimulated a brisk demand for chamber music transcriptions of popular larger works. Arrangements allowed the music aficionado to re-live a concert experience through his/her own music-making. Opera arrangements, potpourris, and fantasias on beloved opera melodies were consequently extremely popular and at times the most frequently published compositional genres.
