The Dutch soprano Gre Browentstijn first began studying voice at the age of 16, later attending the opera classes of the Amsterdam Conservatory, making her debut in 1940 as the Second Lady in 'The Magic Flute'. After the war she was hired by De Nederlands Oper Amsterdam where she performed one of her early triumphs: Leonore in Fidelio. She also became one of the pre-eminent artists at the famed Holland Festival, where she achieved great success as Jenufa, Amelia, Desdemona and the Countess in 'The Marriage of Figar'.
