Notes & Reviews:

This sacred musical work for vocal parts and basso continuo composed by Schutz on the occasion of the death of his prince Heinrich Posthumus Reuss offers an alternative to the Latin exequies of the Catholic Church in the manner of a Lutheran German mass. In addition to the exequies, the disc includes splendid settings of seven Penitential Psalms selected from two collections, the Becker Psalter and the Psalms of David. The interpreters once again negotiate an ideal compromise between historical precision and the standards to be met and set in the convincing and vibrant interpretation of sacred music.

Gramophone Magazine
Cordes produces a fine alternative to the smoother 'choral' versions by John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir...The shorter motet Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe and the Venetian-influenced Canticum Simeonis (the Nunc Dimittis) are captivatingly sung

Reviews

Well performed, if slightly dull, works from Schutz
Sombre funerial works. Early baroque style with very little counterpoint. Performance and recording both good. Read the full review at: http://www.classical-cd-reviews.com/2010/05/heinrich-schutz-musikalische-exequien.html
