The cellist Ulrich Heinen was born in Germany and studied at the Cologne Conservatoire and the Juilliard School. He won several national and international competitions including the Rostropovich Competition in La Rochelle, France. In 1984 he became principal cellist of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
A virtuoso and deeply musical performance of major music for solo cello by German cellist Ulrich Heinen includes the first five of Bach's Cello Suites, with modern works which have been inspired by Bach or reflect in a modern way the Bachian principles of composition; from B A Zimmermann, Hans Werner Henze, Simon Holt, Gerald Barry and Howard Skempton.
