Notes & Reviews:
Heinrich Kaspar Schmid's death in Munich in 1953 marked the end of the life of an artist whose overall musical achievement is still very far from receiving its proper due in today's recording world. This recording of some of Schmid's late chamber compositions serves as an introduction to this lyrical late-romantic composer. Schumann and Brahms without any doubt remained his musical godfathers to the very end, but the godson had his individuality and developed a character all of his own.
"Schmidt's music will hardly be mistaken for anyone else's; for their dates of creation, all these works step back at least 60 years in time. At the same time, his craft is meticulous and thoughtful, his use of instruments natural and idiomatic, his voice fresh and sincere, and the unaware listener might well guess Brahms or Bruch. Rimmer, Monkemeyer, Grehl and Zurl give very professional performances, all rendered with excellent technical command, good teamwork, and exquisite phrasing and color; but they take a more conservative approach than one might prefer, employing their edge and fire very selectively. Of the four, Grehl is the most zealous, though sometimes at the cost of his otherwise silky timbre. Still, the group makes an excellent case for a composer whose works deserve to be on the same program with the masters he revered."-American Record Guide
