Théodore Gouvy: Symphonie No. 2

Notes & Reviews:

Gouvy was more concerned with balance, moderation and good taste than in operatic glamour that would doubtless have brought him fame and fortune. But, as he came from a wealthy family, he never had to accept artistic compromise in order to survive, and was thus able to compose in the idiom that interested him most, even if it seems an unpopular one. Even the hard-to-please Hector Berlioz expressed with surprise "...that a composer of his importance should still be so little known in Paris."

"Exceptional balance, pristine intonation, vibrant colors and textures, and ensemble cohesiveness all characterize the WPR's playing, and Kalb captures the impact and finesse of Gouvy's music with careful attention to detail, moving use of dynamics and rubato, and well-chosen tempos throughout. Listeners who enjoy the symphonic works of the German Romantics will doubtlessly enjoy this fine and long overdue addition to their collections." -All Music Guide
