Notes & Reviews:

One name that frequently comes up in Anglophile's enquiries about unrecorded music is that of Algernon Ashton. Dutton now aims to fill this gap in the catalog, starting with the first volume in a series of discs featuring Ashton's piano music, featuring Canadian pianist Leslie De'Ath. These sonatas probably date from the late nineteenth century but were published in the 1920s, and are the most significant body of piano music by a British composer before Bax.

"Each sonata, while in the sphere of romanticism, keeps its emotions in check, never wearing its heart on its sleeve, and carefully avoids spilling over with sentimentality. Because of sameness of pace and the similar compositional means, listeners are advised not to attempt listening to the sonatas together. Heard individually they are most enjoyable. The other short pieces show Ashton's ability to work in small forms. They are quite charming genre pieces and add additional personality to our portrait of the composer. De'ath is a most effective advocate for this music. His own notes stand as a model of how to get things right, and the Dutton sound engineers leave no room for complaint. With the offer of two discs for the price of one, the package is mighty tempting."-American Record Guide

International Record Review
De'Ath takes the opening movement to Sonata No. 4 on a most amiable journey - the music trots along at a measured, Schumannesque Allegro...while the Allegro frescamente (the finale of the Eighth) emerges as one of [his] triumphs
