Notes & Reviews:

Laurence Lesser, pupil of Gregor Piatigorsky and Gaspar Cassado, and former President of the New England Conservatory, joins forces with pianist HaeSun Paik, winner of top prizes at the Leeds, Tchaikovsky, William Kappell, & Queen Elisabeth (Belgium) competitions, in performances of Beethoven's complete music for Cello and Piano. The performances were recorded in 2009 in the acoustically superb Jordan Hall (Boston). Included with the double-CD set is a DVD featuring the artists in 2009 concerts from Kumho Art Hall (Seoul, South Korea), biographical material, and a discussion of Beethoven's compositions for cello and piano.

"Who is Laurence Lesser? Not a habitue on the London circuit, where these are to be heard several times each year. Well, he is a very, very distinguished American cellist of the older generation, famous as recitalist, chamber music player, teacher and college administrator, with this project as "a 70 yr old birthday present to myself". Besides the usual double-disc there is a tempting third one, a 50 mins DVD of talks, discussions and live performances...The performances (both live in concert and studio recordings) preserve accounts by these artists as good as you'll be able to find amongst all Lesser's more famous predecessors and competitors who have recorded the Beethoven oeuvre...do not hesitate to add this set to your collection." - musicalpointers.co.uk

"This well-filled set is ideal for lovers of the cello as it brings together all the music Beethoven wrote for the instrument in chamber format. Lesser and Park are hugely sympathetic partners bringing panache and style to the proceedings especially the three variations which include some well known tunes.

The Sonatas are quite varied in character with the first two coming from the early Beethoven period, the second in the middle and the final pair from the late part of the composer's life. The G minor sonata is particularly beautiful with the composer finding much soulful solace in the opening Adagio with Lesser playing his instrument with true emphatic feeling.

However it is the Op. 102 sonatas which are obviously more of a heavyweight nature and both Lesser and Paik feel the music to its bones. Bridge's recording is extremely natural and well-honed with the D Major sonata probably one of the finest available on record at present. Add a fastidiously detailed booklet with copious notes on each work and you have a sure-fire winner in the chamber music category. "-classical.net
