Album Remarks & Appraisals:
"With a voice that makes him sound like he was born to sing bossa nova, Sao Paulo-born Chico Pinheiro's acoustic and electric guitar strains easily meld the Brazilian saudade with North American swing on his debut CD for Sunnyside. Singing in Portuguese and English (as well as wordlessly), Pinheiro brings together players and vocalists from South America, the States and Cuba to craft a cross-cultural musical program of dulcet passion and nuanced detail. His cast includes drummer Edu Ribeiro, bassists Paulo Pauleli and Marcelo Mariano, keyboard players Paulo Calasans and Fabio Torres, percussionists Marco Bosco and Marcos Spirito and vocalist Luciana Alves, plus a full string section on three of the 12 tracks. Special guests Dianne Reeves and Bob Mintzer truly do make the occasion special, Reeves' gorgeous alto taking the melody on the title track and Mintzer contributing tenor sax and bass clarinet solos on several cuts." -DownBeat
Down Beat (p.83) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "His feeling is intimate and his intonation is superb....Ballads, rhythms tunes of many stripes and an all-skate cooker show Pinheiro's material range."
JazzTimes (p.61) - "Whether the songs here swing percussively, sway gently, sing praises or percolate like aromatic black coffee, you can sense that a wistful glance or a teardrop is always just around the corner."
