Notes & Reviews:

El Nuevo Mundo, Jordi Savall's latest fascinating project, is an exploration of the music of the Americas that illuminates the extraordinary blending of musical cultures that occurred with the arrival of European explorers and conquerors. The album's goal is to introduce the listener to extraordinary music that has been kept alive for centuries, often in regions remote from major towns and cities. Jordi Savall and his groups Hesperion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya are your guides on this musical journey from Spain to Peru to Mexico, joined by special guest artists Tembembe Ensamble Continuo.

"A fearless performer who is fascinated with facilitating musical dialogues between Eastern and Western traditions."- NPR

"Is this early, folk or world music? All three...An exuberant and spontaneous creative energy is sustained throughout, while the presentation is lavish and scholarly." -Sunday Times

"Here are foot-tapping thrills, secular in spirit even when sacred, strummed by jolly strings, peppered with ethnic percussion, or streaked with the brightly burnished soprano of Montserrat Figueras. Lush documentation as usual with AliaVox, but the best prize of all is the music and musicians' warmth and humanity." -The Times

"The line between early and world music is blurred, the roots of Latin American jazz exposed...the diversity of instrumentation and voices (from Montserrat Figueras and Furio Zanasi to Leopoldo Novoa) lends depth and colour and the rhythms are infectious." -The Independent on Sunday

"The performances have a dash and abandon that are genuinely convincing...The sense of occasion and spontaneity of a live recording is conveyed without artifice." -Gramophone Magazine

The Independent on Sunday
Instrumentation and voices (from Montserrat Figueras and Furio Zanasi to Leopoldo Novoa) lends depth and colour and the rhythms are infectious.

Gramophone Magazine
The result is a very polished, sophisticated sound world largely lacking the exuberance that one might expect, at least on occasion, from such repertories, but that in itself is a cue to the listener...that our expectations of non-Western musics are easily confounded.

The Observer
This vivid exploration of 17th-century Sephardic and Armenian musical traditions, fruits of the late Ottoman empire melting pot, will refresh jaded Christmas ears. It's prime Jordi Savall territory.
