Notes & Reviews:

Anniversary years often celebrate what we all already know, but sometimes they also serve a useful purpose, especially when they reveal previously unknown facets of a famous composer. Here CPO is in its element, and this is Robert Schumann's year. In 1834 Schumann founded the 'Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik' (NZfM) in order to combat what he regarded as the degenerate state of musical affairs prevailing at the time, to convey a critical sensibility for valuable music to its readers, and to lend vigorous support to gifted composers. A supplement project helped him to meet these goals: four times a year an issue of his journal was supplemented and printed with a "Collection of Music-Pieces from Old and New Times" in the form of a volume of music usually containing four compositions. The result consisted of sixteen volumes of music with a total of sixty-nine compositions by thirty-nine male and female composers, and today offers us a unique glimpse at Schumann's circle of musical friends, whose members stand united here. We find songs, piano pieces, organ pieces, and choral works - a thrilling journey back in musical time to the first half of the nineteenth century!
