Notes & Reviews:

These two works have more in common than their brooding key signature of G minor. Chopin and Schumann share a use of particularly inventive melodic and harmonic language; and the two trios share an earnest, heartfelt lyricism that is so genuine and really quite irresistible.

These two pieces have been important in the development of the piano trio genre. The Chopin trio, an early part of his creative output, represents the first hints of nationalism in the medium. As Chopin writes from these deepest roots, so too does Schumann, whose music is characterized by his markedly inward perspective. Schumann embodies the Romantic ideal: this music is an expression of his innermost feelings. The emotional extremes in this work, and the idiosyncratic, beautiful way of bringing them to life, are pure Schumann.

Manhattan Piano TrioHailed by critics as "a grand departure from the usual" (News Herald), the Manhattan Piano Trio has quickly become one of the most creative, exciting, and dynamic young ensembles in the United States. With more than 300 concerts in its first five seasons alone, Manhattan Piano Trio is one of the most active groups in the classical music scene. The Washington Post described the Trio as "impressive" and "outstanding."
