Inner Voice

Notes & Reviews:

The four compositions featured on this disc are striking examples of self-expression, guided and influenced by each composer’s fundamental essence, or “Inner voice.” Benjamin Britten’s Lachrymae, a synonym for “tears,” may be seen as the composer’s revulsion in the wake of the second World War, when it was written. George Rochberg’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, begun during the same time, was only completed as a commission in honor of violist William Primrose’s 75th birthday, some time after Rochberg had abandoned his earlier serialism and was composing tonal works to reflect his belief in “the art of beauty.” Such a path can also be traced in the career of Arvo Pärt, who abandoned serialism for a rarified musical language he terms “tintinnabulation,” which means “bell-like.” Shostakovich’s Op. 147 is his final work, composed during the last few months of his life as he lay dying in a Moscow hospital, and reflects an inner voice resigned to a belief that death offers nothing but silence and darkness. These powerful works, so varied in scope, aspect and purpose, offer compelling personal statements of four creative twentieth-century composers.
