Album Remarks & Appraisals:
Synopsis: First ECM release of vintage Jarrett filmed concert material. In the 25th Anniversary Year of the Standards Trio, and after the runaway success of the "Setting Standards" 3-CD box, this is another essential purchase for fans of the trio. This release features material previously issued in Japans, never available in many world territories, now out of print everywhere and much sought-after by collectors, and command hundreds of dollars on ebay! The two Japanese shows have quite different characters. Volume I finds Jarrett reaching into a down-home, countryand- gospel inflected mode on several tunes, especially his own piece "Rider" and the Arthur Herzog/Billie Holiday "God Bless The Child". Volume II features a particularly exquisite performance of an all-standards programme, with a transcendent "On Green Dolphin Street" and a version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Woody'n'You" that embodies the best of bebop. The films offer real insight into the interactive nature of the trio's playing. They give an intimate picture of a group whose fame has since driven it toward ever larger concert halls and festivals.
