Notes & Reviews:
"naïve classique is pleased to present the their first release featuring art song interpretations by internationally-acclaimed French baritone Stephane Degout. Since his triumphant debut as Papageno at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 1999, Mr. Degout has appeared at major opera houses around the world, including the the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and the Glyndebourne Festival. The recording featured gems of the French mélodie repertoire. Baritone Stéphane Degout had already featured on Brahms' German Requiem and Fauré's Requiem by Accentus. The program is a selection of various French composers that composed marvels that did not get the same notoriety as Ravel, Debussy or Fauré. Stéphane Degout is performing in several major opera performances in 2010-2011, beside Sir Simon Rattle, Magdalena Kozena, Juan Diego Flórez, Joyce DiDonato, Diana Damrau... "
"[there's] no mistaking the quality of his sensual, yet gritty voice, or of his artistry...Degout has an exceptional, if unobtrusive way of projecting a text, and you're conscious - as in the various settings of Baudelaire, Verlaine and Gautier - of listening to great poetry as well as great music...There's wonderfully fluid playing from his accompanist Hélène Lucas, too." -The Guardian*****
"The voice - a natural for Pelléas, one would think - responds rapturously to Debussy and Verlaine's submarine wonders" - Gramophone
