Transfiguration' is acclaimed star soprano Camilla Nylund's much-awaited first album of arias. This CD portrays the lyric dramatic soprano with famous arias and scenes from operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner, including the grueling final scenes from 'Tristan und Isolde' and from 'Salome'. The featured arias reflect the lyrical and dramatic facets of Camilla Nylund's current roles at such venues as Staatsoper Dresden, Vienna State Opera, and Bayreuther Festspiele. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is led by their chief conductor Hannu Lintu.

Their Tristan "VerklSrung" - as we should call it, like the title of this disc - is careful and reverent, and they seem undecided as to how much joy and grief to allow TannhSuser's Elisabeth or sad grandeur to allow Ariadne on her island. Interpretatively more definite, if rather straight-faced, is Daphne's wishing to be a tree. There's much skill in this recital - and that extends to playing and recording - but only the Lohengrin and Salome scenes emerge as fully coloured portraits.

Classic FM
When it's firing on all cylinders - as in the 20-minute chunck of Salome - this disc is thrilling indeed.
