Notes & Reviews:

Gustav Mahler made many comments to the effect that his Sixth Symphony should be understood as a highly personal, even autobiographical work. It was composed in the summers of 1903 and 1904, one of the happiest times of his life - yet he considered the Sixth his 'Tragic Symphony'. Jukka-Pekka Saraste releases his very first Mahler symphony with this recording.

Reviews

Very Good Recording of one of Mahlerís Lesser Known Symphonies
I enjoyed this recording of Mahlerís 6th Symphony. This is not a work you see programmed on many symphonic programs, but it has all of the excitement and artistry of all of his symphonies. The first movement is quite militaristic, perhaps reflective of Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, but the second movement highlights the wonderful quiet solos and interesting woodwind/brass interplay that Mahler did so well. Thereís also quite a bit of pure Romantic string and harp work, showing Mahlerís stretch between that period and the late 19th century. Finally, Mahler seems to introduce some rather odd modern influences in some sort of ghostly percussion accompaniment in the second half of the symphony. The Oslo symphony does a great job with the piece, and I think any Mahler fan will enjoy this recording.
