Few tenors have polarized opera fans more than Kurt Baum. While some consider him nothing more than a loud and showy singer, others wax lyrical about the incredible strength and reliability of his high notes. He exemplified the often quoted theory that a voice need not be beautiful as long as it is exciting. Born in the Czech Republic, he became an American citizen in 1966 and died in New York.
