Notes & Reviews:

The first new Trio Mediaeval album in four years (since Folk Songs), and the first since Stella Maris (2005) to feature medieval sacred music. A Worchester Ladymass is eagerly awaited. The album presents a reconstruction of a 13th century votive Mass to the Virgin Mary, based on manuscripts and fragments originating in a Benedictine Abbey in the English Midlands. Inserted amid the medieval music scene are a Credo and Benedicamus Domino specially written for this program by Gavin Bryars, one of several leading contemporary composers who has championed the Trio since the beginning of its history. The old and the new, literally and conceptually, intermingle in the work of this vocal ensemble.

The three female voices combine to produce a sound of extraordinary and consoling beauty. The singers also operate on a high level of musician ship and technical sophistication”-The Boston Globe

"Whatever possesses humans to refine the art of singing to such a level of sonorous purity and expressive simplicity as exemplified by the three women of Trio Mediaeval? This cannot be explained by some biological evolutionary process or higher-level survival mechanism, but there is no question that the effect of hearing such music, so unadorned, lucid, and sincere, touches something special and mysterious in the humans fortunate enough to be within listening range... the ancient polyphony floats, weaves, soars, and descends, praying, praising, meditating, uplifting. The unison plainchant Agnus Dei is accompanied--to eerie, other-worldly effect--by melody chimes; a sung open-fifth drone supports solo voice in the Communion plainchant Alma Dei genitrix... The sound, from the ideal acoustics of Propstei St. Gerold, a Benedictine monastery in Austria where Trio Mediaeval has recorded previously, captures the beauty and truth of these performances as well as we can imagine. Highly recommended." -ClassicsToday (10/10)

The Telegraph
Trio Mediæval once more apply their ingenuity to sacred vocal music from the 13th century. This putative votive Mass to the Virgin Mary is reconstructed from fragments of polyphony and plainsong that survived at Worcester...the three female voices sing the Mass with haunting purity and tangy timbre.

BBC Music Magazine
The whole programme flows together beautifully and the Trio's diction and tone perfectly combines celestial purity and perfection with human warmth and vulnerability.

Sunday Times
The music assembled by the Trio Medieval is hugely varied, with spoken or intoned prayers and readings replaced by works in the conductus and motet styles. Into this mix are added a Credo and a Benedicamus Domino, newly composed by Gavin Bryars. The atmosphere is magical.
