Notes & Reviews:

On one hand, Beethoven stands for the free and uncompromising artist who vouches for human ideals. On the other, he grasped music itself, linking themes and motifs with unprecedented power. In this respect, Nietzsche’s witticism that Beethoven wrote "music about music" can be understood as appropriate praise.
