Notes & Reviews:

This is Chandos' first volume bringing to life the rarely heard but rich and colorful music of Austrian composer Johann Rufinatscha. While little is known of Rufinatscha today, he held an established place in Vienna's highest musical circles, counting Brahms among his friends. These are world premiere recordings, performed by the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda - a partnership noted for the precision and fullness of their sound as well as the strength of their musical interpretations.

Gramophone Magazine
Rufinatscha evidently had a gift for a melody full of sunshine. This hour-long D major symphony (his last, from 1865) is full of them

International Record Review
[Rufinatscha's] use of the orchestra and his feeling for symphonic architecture were both relatively new. He's more than a mere oddity, though: it's clear that we need to know about Rufinatscha to understand the continuum of Viennese symphonism - and there must be much more that we still have to discover. Gianandrea Noseda and his Manchester musicians give first-rate account of both works.

The Independent
Gianandrea Noseda's disc reveals a predilection for the mellow sonorities of viola and cello. Rufinatscha nods to Beethoven in "Die Braut von Messina", while the "Sixth" sounds like Schumann minus the neurosis and genius. Handsome, but not the stuff of grand passion.
