Notes & Reviews:

Frieder Bernius, a notorious treasure hunter, once again rescued a true gem from oblivion: Die Geisterinsel, by the Hofkapellmeister of Württemberg, Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg (1760 - 1802), first performed in Stuttgart in 1798. The opera in three acts, based on Shakespeare's comedy The Tempest, was immensely successful in its day. It shares a close affinity to Mozart's Magic Flute and possesses elements of a great Singspiel: large ensemble numbers, effective arias and choruses rich in contrast.
