Notes & Reviews:

2011 is also a Mahler anniversary year as it is the 100th anniversary of the composer's death (May 18th).In celebration, Deutsche Grammophon has uncovered a treasure from the archive: this live recording of a sold-out concert from the Vienna Festival given at the Musikverein on June 14, 1964.With incomparable soloists at the height of their individual powers, this was an unforgettable performance. Now being released for the first time, this recording comes from a unique source in the Krips family archive - a copy of the original ORF (Austrian Radio) tape for which the original tape can no longer be found.Faithfully restored, this recording presents a marvel of singing and orchestral playing.

Notes & Reviews:

Recording information: Vienna, Musikverein, Groáer Saal (06/14/1964).

Tantalizing but superfluous
Fischer-Dieskau, in his autobiography "Reverberations," was quite condescending toward Wunderlich, categorizing him as talented but shallow. Yet in this performance of "Das Lied," the younger singer far surpasses the old master. Wunderlich is in fine voice (though he was better still with Klemperer on EMI), but Fischer-Dieskau too often barks and shouts and fails to sustain a singing line--a bad day for him, perhaps? Look for his other recordings of "Das Lied." This one is not worth the fuss that's been made over it.
