Notes & Reviews:

In his day, Hermann Scherchen was considered a pioneer of avant-garde music. However, he also regularly interpreted the works of Bach, Schoenberg and especially Mahler. He performed Mahler's Fifth Symphony at his first concert in Berlin in February of 1914 and at his last concert in Bremen in May of 1966. Over his 54-year career, his performances of all of Mahler's symphonies totaled 89, and included 22 performances of Mahler's fifth. This new set from Tahra includes symphonies 1, 5 & 7 recorded in the mid 1950s.
