Notes & Reviews:

The organ concerto flourished in the Barock period, and early classical age, and, with a few exceptions (Rheinberger, Poulenc, Guilmant and Dupre) has not found favour with composers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Perhaps the most famous Barock concertos are those by Handel - his Op.4 and Op. 7 sets. These date from the period of his great oratorios, and where written as vehicles to display his organ playing during the intervals and between the acts of the oratorios. Handel was a great improvisor, and these concertos have markings 'ad lib' liberally scattered throughout the scores. Vivaldi composed over 600 concertos for a wide variety of instruments, often in unusual combinations. The concertos here are for violin, organ and strings and have all the hallmarks of the composer of The Four Seasons. Padre Antonio Soler's concertos are unique in that they have no orchestra - the two organs play the part of soloist and accompaniment. Frantisek Brixi came from a Czech musical dynasty. He was a prolific composer, producing over 500 works - including the organ concertos included here. His style of writing is close to Alessandro Scarlatti with lively rhythms and a vibrant fresh melodic gift. He lived until 1771, and his influence upon Czech musical life was profound - influencing the young Mozart and generations of later Czech composers. Haydn's organ concertos are all early works dating from the 1750s when he was working for Count Morzin. They may have been composed for use at one of Haydn's many Sunday jobs as it was customary in Austria and Bohemia to play organconcertos in the middle of Mass. Mozart's later church sonatas were written for this very purpose. Other information * A fascinating survey of the organ concerto from the Barock to classical periods, including some lesser known repertoire.
