Notes & Reviews:

In 1993 CPO recorded the Krenek Symphonies - 3 out of 4. The 4th Symphony score was regarded as lost. But then in 2007, the score resurfaced in America now making this world premiere recording possible, and the collection of Krenek Symphony recordings complete! In 1938 Krenek met the composer and conductor Mitropoulos, who thenceforth supported him by performing his older and newer works. Mitropoulos also commissioned the composition of the Symphony No. 4 and premiered it in New York in 1947. It is an extremely complex work in free atonality but also with tonal elements of design. In stark contrast is the Concerto Grosso No. 2, a work full of performance verve and irresistible drive written in the 1920's during Krenek's neobaroque phase.

The Guardian
The Concerto Grosso No.2 (1924), nicely done by Alun Francis and his Hanover-based orchestra, is a mock-Baroque piece that glances at both Pulcinella and Bach's First Brandenburg Concerto, though its acerbic dissonances and intimations of threat locate it firmly in the Austro-German world of the early 20th century.
