Notes & Reviews:
Stephan Temmingh's third record on Oehms features Bach harpsichord works, orchestrated for recorder, lute and viola. Stefan's love of Bach pushed him to take on this unique challenge and focus on performance practice in the baroque. In an extensive booklet text, he argues that the harpsichord literature in the baroque era was transcribed for other instruments quasi as a "lingua franca". Reorchestrated versions of Bach's Concerto for Four Harpsichords (itself an arrangement of Vivaldi compositions), for example, can be found from the 18th century, usually for one or two melody instruments with continuo. Although this combination of instruments emphasizes another aspect of the composition, the fundamental idea behind the music does not change.
Pizzicato
It is clear that this record production moves in another direction and she brings to life a common practice in ancient times who was to adapt a work written for a given size to another. In this regard, we must not forget that the great Cantor of Leipzig was himself a great expert in the art of transcription. We (re) discover so here, with great happiness, the harpsichord works, we think we know yet, and presented to us in a whole new light. When the flute starts to interact with the viola da gamba, it perfectly captures the sense of the term 'phrase', as we apprehend with delight all the melodic lines, all the breath that animates Bach's music. Much less rigid than the harpsichord, flute, viola and lute know cause stress and falls that are usually absent in large harpsichord versions. The fact that a flutist eyes on this extraordinary garden may be able to bring a new reflection of the keyboardists in the camp: for our part, we will try to learn a lesson!

... Temmingh is anything other than technically superb. He's got a lot of power (an odd thing to say of a recorder player, perhaps, but relevant), and he can carry through a pitch or a short phrase with enough of a sense of a tonal center to let him bend notes a bit without falling into the distressing sliding tones that characterized recorder albums in the bad old days. He's a pleasure to listen to on a disc that will have the most appeal to those with an inclination toward speculative performance styles, and he is aided by total sonic clarity from the crack Oehms engineering team.

... Temmingh's... playing, once again, is touching and masterly. The recorded sound is close and has a wonderful presence. The effect is intimate, like the three musicians are playing just for us.
