Brahms, Johannes : Symphony no 4 in E minor, Op. 98Notes & Reviews:
This 1976 recording of the critically acclaimed Brahms cycle features the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig led by conductor Kurt Masur. According to "connoisseurs" these old Philips recordings belong to the best recordings of Brahms symphonies ever made. 3 disc SACD set.
"Warm, generally lucid recordings convey the orchestra's civilizing style: its sweet string tone, violins full and certain above the stave, brass and timpani finely blended, woodwinds, always eloquent, shedding their tones from finely judged, naturally conceived, aural perspectives. To hear Masur and his orchestra at their best one should turn to the middle movements of the middle symphonies where they memorably catch the meeza voce mood of the two intermezzi, where the Third Symphony's Andante is beautifully motioned and sung, the old-world state of the clarinets at fig. C perfectly grasped and reproduced, and where the Second Symphony's expansive lyricism is treated to phrasing of great lightness and charm." -Gramophone
"Tempos are moderate-to-slow... while orchestral textures are mostly transparent, allowing the finer details of Brahms' orchestration to emerge. Providing all this illumination is the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, an ensemble famous for its long-standing Brahms tradition." -Classics Today
