Album Summary
Performer
Roland Mueller (Guitar)
Notes & Reviews:
In this CD, the Swiss guitarist Roland Müller has brought together works for the guitar that are particularly popular and frequently requested in concert. The origins of the composers represented here illustrates the global relevance of the guitar, which is equally significant in the works of composers in Europe as it is in Latin America and Asia. Any list of the most famous composers for the guitar would certainly include the Cuban Leo Brouwer, whose melancholy "Un dia di noviembre" can be heard here. Other sounds from the South American continent come from Jorge Gomez Crespo and Adrian Patiño. Carlo Domenico, Enrique Granados, Fernando Sor and Roland Dyens represent the musical tradition of old Europe. The piece "Sakura" by Yuquijiro Yocoh introduces the colors of Japan to this varied program. Roland Mueller studied with Jury Clormann in Winterthur, Karl Scheit in Vienna and Sonja Prunnbauer in Freiburg. He performs concerts in many countries in Europe and in North America and givesmaster classes in the USA and Europe.
American Record Guide
Mueller plays with a strong technique, lots of color, lots of heart. I've heard better individual performances of many of these works, but only a bit better. It's good to have them all in one excellent recital.
Minor 7th
... Mueller makes it apparent that he takes bold approach to the classical guitar. His technique is distinctly aggressive and broad, with sweeping dynamic changes, and frequent tonal and textural juxtapositions. Mueller's interpretation of Carlo Domeniconi's "Koyunbaba" is without question the most powerful and groundbreaking I have ever heard. And while Mueller is not afraid to push his guitar to its absolute limits, he also revels in the delicate moments in the recording. At his most sensitive, Muller takes extreme liberty with the music, artfully extending his phrases and delicately delivering every individual note... Mueller concludes with a charming and playful interpretation of "Tango en Skaï" by Roland Dyens, which nicely ties together the entire disc. Mueller clearly set out, and succeeded, to record a disc that is just as exhilarating as his live performances; this is one that's definitely worth the price of admission!
