Notes & Reviews:

The Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra is the work that brought world-wide fame to Joaquín Rodrigo. The theme from this concerto in its various forms, are the base from which some of Rodrigo's vocal music was written, "En Aranjuez con tu amor" is an example of this. Rodrigo's music is subtle, deeply optimistic and uses the soul of his land, in a multi-layered way, as a source of inspiration for the vocal and instrumental music on this recording.

A Rodrigo Assortment
The Spanish Art Quartet – “En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor” – NCA

With its atypical grouping of soprano, violin, and guitar duo, the Spanish Art Quartet (in collaboration with composer Joaquin Rodrigo) has recorded several of Rodrigo’s lesser-known compositions, including musical settings of works by Spanish “Golden Era” poet, Lope de Vega, and texts from anonymous manuscript sources. Additionally, there are three separate variations of the main theme of the Adagio movement from the Concerto de Aranjuez, Rodrigo’s most famous work.

The result is a well made recording with an ‘odds and ends’ feel to it: the only thing holding this disjointed collection of compositions together is the fact of their common origin.

Well performed (as one would hope, from a band playing its own arrangements) and recorded with technical precision, “En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor” is conditionally recommended as being of archival interest to Rodrigo enthusiasts and students of modern Spanish music in general.

Unfortunately, the repertoire presented here by the Spanish Art Quartet, despite some excellent guitar playing by brothers Klaus and Rainer Feldman, is probably a little too specialized to be of more than passing interest to the casual listener.
