Frank Shipway, one of Britain's foremost international conductors, studied with Sir John Barbirolli and received invaluable help from Herbert von Karajan, but career really began to expand when Lorin Maazel invited him to the Berlin Opera. He has worked often in the opera theatre, including Glyndebourne and English National Opera. During his Berlin years, Shipway's repertoire included the operas of Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, and Strauss. He has given masterclasses in many parts of the world, and has judged the Maleo and Toscanini conducting competitions. He was awarded a gold disc for his recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
