Notes & Reviews:

The Piano Trios, written between 1784 and 1797, represent Haydn's art at its most enjoyable and fresh. Three of the trios in this recording were dedicated to Rebecca Schroeter, who lived in London and was a close friend of the composer. Trio No. 26 includes a version of the Adagio of Symphony No. 102, which it has been suggested was a favourite of hers. And the G major sports the famous 'Gypsy Rondo' finale (Rondo all'ongarese), one of the most ebullient and best loved movements in the entire repertoire. The Kungsbacka is one of the world's finest trios, and their Mozart trio set (Naxos 8.570519) received outstanding reviews; "authentically felt and absorbingly communicated." (Gramophone).

The Kungsbacka Trio takes its name from the Swedish town in which it gave its first performance and where it has established an annual festival. Winner of First Prize in the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, it has since appeared at numerous festivals and venues throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Ritmo
An integral new piano trios by Haydn. We chose to begin with a set winning fairly and Haydn presents a sleek, transparent, classic and deep. full of ideas and adorned with dazzling virtuosity. The whole album is heard with infinite pleasure. And they know nobly phrased, no shield against one another, draw all their original beauty with amazing ease and agitated and angry, just enough and the few moments when they claim. Everything flows with a natural dynamism. By the way Mozart and Schubert his have been highly rated by critics. And rightly so.

Gramophone
..it's clear that there are riches indeed among the trios.Andrew Keener's sound... gives each musician plenty of space, allowing a fine balance between the instruments of this notoriously tricky combination. But what matters is the music; and any group that is willing to take it seriously is guaranteed to reap the dividends. Personal favourites in the Gypsy Rondo include Trio Fontenay and the Vienna Piano Trio... The Kungsbackas need fear nothing in comparison.

MusicWeb International
The musicians of the Kungsbacka piano trio exhibit excellent, deep understanding of the music of Joseph Haydn, the music that above all requires not the virtuosity, not the emotionality, but understanding. The recording is very clear, with a good special definition. The sound is not flat. The three instruments blend perfectly. The selection of the trios on this disc provides enough diversity, so the listening never becomes boring. ... this set by the Kungbacka is an excellent and easily affordable entry point.

KPT's consistently pacy approach is only sometimes successful yet they give always good and sometimes very good performances recorded with vivid immediacy.

Sweden's Kungsbacka Piano Trio has made solid recordings of Mozart's chamber music, and they clearly have a feel for how to bring out the unusual qualities of a Classical-era composition without going beyond the boundaries of the style. There's the right level of mystery in the Kungsbacka's playing here, and the right level of lyricism in the very Schubertian opening melody of the Piano Trio in F sharp minor, Hob. 25/26. There's a lot to like in their playing here...

Svenska Dagbladet (Sweden)
After Kungsbacka trio recordings of Schubert and Mozart on Naxos is a Haydn disc, then a Chopin CD. Of the four selected trioma completed numbers 24, 25 and 26, London 1795, and dedicated to the Op 73 Haydn close friend Rebecca Schroeter. Best known is No. 25 in G minor, with zigenarrondot. The Adagio of the Symphony 102, a favorite of the widow Schroeter, form my batch of 26. Included is also No. 31 in E flat major. Intimate, enjoyable performances in which the humanity of Haydn appears in Simon Crawford Phillips performing the central piano kit, and even more in Malin Broman's violin, which tenderly lifts the adagio of No 25.
