Ensemble Composers

Notes & Reviews:

In this album, Notable Women, the Lincoln Trio (Desiree Ruhstrat, violin; David Cunliffe, cello; Marta Aznavoorian, piano) come together to perform pieces written by female composers. Lera Auerbach, Stacy Garrop, Jennifer Higdon, Augusta Read Thomas and Joan Tower are among the women composers featured in this truly remarkable work.

MusicWeb International
The marvellous Lincoln Trio performed... this often highly exigent music. Only the works by Higdon and Thomas have been previously recorded.

American Record Guide
The Lincoln Trio is superb in this program of piano trios... They really dig into their instruments when necessary, their pitch is spot on, and their range of expression is wide.

Fanfare
This compact disc was produced and engineered by Grammy Award-winner Judith Sherman. The sound is clear, the balances seem natural, and the sound of the trio is close to what you would hear if you were listening to them play in a small hall with good acoustics. This is the premiere recording of the works by Tower and Schwendinger. The Lincoln Trio plays all these pieces with exquisite taste, so this disc would be an important addition to any library.

The Observer (London)
Don't be put off by the title. This intriguing disc, beautifully played, offers a quick survey of six living US composers who happen to be female: Lera Auerbach, Stacy Garrop, Jennifer Higdon, Laura Elise Schwendinger, Augusta Read Thomas and Joan Tower. If you can tell this music is by women, you're a better man than I.

Gramophone
The performances by the Lincoln Trio are models of vibrancy and control. The notables on this recording could hardly have better champions.

Sequenza21.com
The trio are formidable advocates, playing with impressive command and unrelenting energy throughout. Recommended.

The Classical Review
This varied and imaginative program offers much music worth investigating for listeners and piano trios alike, the Auerbach and Tower works in particular. The Lincoln Trio's performances are polished, exhilarating, and first class throughout, with a recording in the best Çedille house tradition. Highly recommended.

The WholeNote
The Lincoln Trio... musicality is put to the test in Lera Auerbach's Trio where the melancholy ideas are performed with haunting expertise. Stacy Garrop's Seven is a unique work which the composer explains drew its inspiration from Anne Sexton's poem Seven Times, and the Borg from television's Star Trek Voyager. Extended piano techniques create futuristic effects while fast-paced passages maintain one's interest long after the work has ended. Excellent works by Jennifer Higdon, Laura Elise Schwendinger, Augusta Read Thomas and Joan Tower are also performed with spirit.

Baker & Taylor CD Hotlist
For this album, the Lincoln Trio has gathered an impressive collection of chamber works by contemporary women... While the pieces vary widely in style and mood... all are virtuosic and are played brilliantly.

Allmusic.com
The Lincoln Trio takes the listener on a musical journey full of energy, vigor, and excellent timing. ... this album is a unique entity with works by talented women composers and a talented group of musicians who deserve to be lauded.

Audiophile Audition
This is a marvelous program and the Lincoln Trio performs brilliantly. They are wonderful musicians with a very clear and most gratifying commitment to contemporary music. I support... the concept behind this album, having done similar thematic programming myself. The truest test of all music is not in the awareness that it is written by a female composer - or any demographic - but in discovering that it is good music, deserving to be heard again and again. This disc is comprised of all great pieces that I strongly recommend!
