Notes & Reviews:

Giovanni Simone Mayr's La Lodoiska premiered in 1796 in Venice. It was among the most popular operas of its time. At the center of Mayr's turbulent opera, which is full of power politics, is a couple trying to find each other. Gripping and suspenseful throughout, the action of the choral and ensemble scenes supports this tableau from beginning to end. The figure of Lodoiska and her musical characterization are among Mayr's best creations. Giovanni Simone Mayr, the master of Italian opera from Bavaria, is experiencing a rightful Renaissance. In 2009 and 2010, his opera "Media in Corinto" underwent two great successes: at the Theater St. Gallen and the Bavarian State Opera.

Gramophone
the performance is excellent. Anna Maria Panzarella's bright soprano is beautifully complemented by the darker tones of Elena Belfiore in the trouser role of Lovinski. Jeremy Ovenden makes an ideal Boleslao, his forthright tenor never less than elegant. Petrou's fortepiano continuo is as stylish as his conducting.

Opera News
The present performance is one of those rare occasions in which the whole proves greater than the sum of its parts - not entirely a surprise when the conducting is so strong. George Petrou has an excellent feel for tempo and mood. He brings rigor, impulse and spacious flexibility to the music as needed, playing up the contrasts between forceful and lyric elements, allowing some ceremonial grandeur into the Act II chorus of Poles. The orchestral playing is disciplined ... the soloists respond to the dramatic setups with immediacy, vitality and natural, communicative Italian inflections ...
