Notes & Reviews:

This is the 3rd instalment in the new complete Tchaikovsky Symphony cycle by the Russian National Orchestra, conducted by Mikhail Pletnev. The first release in the cycle (Symphony No. 4) received rave reviews, and listeners and collectors are sure to be just as pleased with this newest addition to the series. Also on the album is the Russian National Orchestra's most recent performance of Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Italien.

"There is a solid punch all the way around, especially at the low end; a wide stereo spread; good instrument separation; and satisfactory orchestral depth. Like other installments in this Pletnev/Tchaikovsky PentaTone cycle, the sound is of near-audiophile quality, acquitting itself nicely and never failing to rise to the occasion when the music calls for grand, clear, undistorted crescendos." -ClassicalCandor

Classic FM Magazine
It's far from just an updated clone of their earlier 'Pathétique', which was serious fiery (E4717422). This one is a touch mellower in tone and style, with no loss at all in terms of class and firepower...Capriccio italien impresses even more, since the work can often seem like a fun piece and little else...Fine material from this stellar team, complementing their previous 'Pathétique' rather than replacing it.

Gramophone Magazine, January 2012
On this evidence, Mikhail Pletnev remains one of the most intelligent and stylish Tchaikovsky conductors around...[he] possesses the happy knack of making one appreciate just how much extraordinarily novel and daringly spare much of the scoring is...The Scherzo in particular ignites, the tempo challengingly swift yet without any suggestion of breathless fluster.
