Notes & Reviews:
Helicon Records' new 'Heritage Series' presents historic recordings of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and features some of the finest conductors to have led the orchestra since its inception. Antal Doráti rose from being the youngest ever conductor of the Royal Opera House in Budapest to being appointed "Conductor Laureate for Life" of three orchestras. This disc from 1963 features Mahler's sixth symphony. All three Helicon recordings are carefully remastered and feature high-quality mono sound.

I can't praise the playing here enough. This ensemble is terrific. They have almost nothing in common (except a huge-sounding tuba) with the IPO that recorded this symphony with Mehta in 1995. The strings shine when the music invites them to and have wonderful bite And texture when needed. The woodwinds are tangy and expressive. The brass players are heroic and, in the coda, strikingly vulnerable. The percussion is powerful and appropriate.
