Notes & Reviews:

Camerata Vocale Freiburg under Winfried Toll is well-known for its unusual programs - and this recording is no exception. The two composers featured here did not devote much of their attention to church music - in fact church music formed a rather small group of works among the compositions created by Fauré and Schumann. Although Schumann had planned to write a larger complex of religious music ever since his Düsseldorf days, he was only able to realize short chorale works, a Requiem - and the Mass featured here. Gabriel Fauré's Requiem occupies something of a special position among the requiems written by famous contemporaries like Berlioz and Verdi. Fauré refrains from using theatrical and monumental effects and presents timbre as the sound of quiet morning.
