Bach: Orchestral Suites; Violin Concerti / Vladimir Spivakov, - Newton Classics

The D minor Concerto for violin & oboe is a scholastically justified reconstruction from the double harpsichord Concerto in C minor, BWV1060, & the three-violin Concerto, BWV1064, is likewise derived from one for 3 harpsichords, the provenance of which is in doubt. Spivakov is the soloist in the concertos, and takes over as conductor for the Four Suites for Orchestra, the orchestra being the Moscow Virtuosi, founded in 1979. They have always been renowned for their bright, clear sound and energetic approach, which jettisoned some of the heavy or aggressive weight associated with some Russian ensembles in Baroque music, while retaining the legerdemain associated with all the great Russian string players.

here are traditional performances that make all the anemic "period" crap sound terrible. The sound here is superb, and the music flows naturally. There is no rigidity, no slavish adherence to a damning set of dogmas... this is the traditional Bach - the only kind worth bothering with. This is far more "musical"... and far more satisfying. I was thrilled with the suites in 1991, and 20 years later this still strikes me as the best you can get.
