Soprano Christiane Oelze & pianist Eric Schneider in a highly praised survey of Webern's Lieder, released initially in '95. Webern's first composition was the song 'Vorfrühling', composed on his 16th birthday in 1899. Not surprisingly, it was very much in the style of Schubert and Schumann Lieder, with nods towards Wolf and Strauss. However, a certain restraint and economy that manages to deliver powerful emotional content is present - something that would become a hallmark of his later style.

Soprano Christiane Oelze sings with transparent clarity, effortless control, and a delicate balance of understanding and innocence; the poetry is always perfectly intelligible, even in the most disjunct lines; and Webern's precise, spacious sound-structures are never obscured. Listeners who have already decided that Webern is not for them may not be persuaded otherwise by this record, but they may be astonished by its haunting beauty.
