Soon after Cherubinis death it became clear to his contemporaries that he had been a composer who had proceeded from Glucks reform opera but had expanded on it in matters of melody, harmony, counterpoint, and instrumentation. Strict truth, seductive charm, a sing-able melody and lyric drama are all elements reflected in Cherubini's D minor mass.
