Notes & Reviews:

A French Soirée is the newest installment in Trio Settecento's acclaimed, country-by-country grand tour of the European Baroque on Cedille Records. Performing on antique instruments of rare beauty and expressive power, this trio of virtuosos breathes life into musical masterpieces that capture the poetic gestures of the French school. On A French Soirée, Trio Settecento brings its imagination, vigor, technical polish, and historical insight to a program that illuminates divergent cultural sensibilities of Baroque France. Some works illustrate the regal, socially conservative, and authoritarian aesthetic of the court of Louis XIV. Others, which would have been heard in the salons of disaffected nobles and wealthy merchants, reflect a more free-spirited, cosmopolitan, and humanistic outlook. The instruments heard on this recording are a 1770 Nicola Gagliano violin in original, unaltered condition; a 1743 basse de viole à sept cordes by Jean Ouvrard; and a 1983 replica of the Dumont/Taskin harpsichord in the museum of the Paris Conservatory of Music.

Praise for Trio Settecento's previous CDs came from both sides of the Atlantic. Reviewing An Italian Sojourn, the UK journal Early Music said violinist Rachel Barton Pine "dispatches the music with considerable panache and virtuosity." The reviewer said he "enjoyed the give-and-take between all three performers . . . especially their ability to allow some rhythmic flexibility without interrupting the flow or spoiling their perfect ensemble." ClassicsToday.com gave the CD its highest rating, a 10/10, for artist quality and sound, calling it "a disc that demands, encourages, and truly rewards many hearings." Gramophone said, "There isn't a piece that doesn't impress." Reviewing A German Bouquet, Strings magazine said, "The music is lovely, and the playing exceptional." BBC Music Magazine called it "a disc of fascinating music, played with real authority and flair." Minnesota Public Radio said the trio members "create a musical environment that welcomes the listener to discover music from centuries ago that they can really enjoy."

American Record Guide
Here is elegant music, elegantly performed... The music spans the reigns of French kings Louis XIV and XV, with the logic behind the program well explained in notes by John Mark Rozendaal... The violinist is Rachel Barton Pine, a familiar name in the world of both violin and early music, and the harpsichordist is David Schrade...

The WholeNote
Trio Settecento has recorded a selection of the finest music of its type, the antidote to those jaded souls who believe baroque music all sounds the same.

The Classical Review
Violin Sonata in G major... perfectly showcases Barton Pine's astounding virtuosity... and shows her handling the devilish multiple-stop writing used to evoke trio sonata texture as if she were creating the sound of two violins on a single instrument... Marais' delightful Chaconne... the two sarabandes, both from concerts (suites) by Couperin, offer some of the most delectable listening on this generally savory disc... Barton Pine's exquisite intonation is one of the reasons listening to her is so rewarding. The Trio Settecento threesome, accustomed to one another from years of playing together, form a pleasing, unified whole, with careful, historically based attention given to matters of phrasing and ornamentation.

ClassicsToday.com
The ensemble shows its impressive cohesiveness in both style and substance in the two tricky Sarabandes by Couperin ... I can't emphasize enough the solid, unwavering communicative skills shown by these musicians, which culminates in one of this year's more enjoyable - and replayable - recordings. Highly recommended.
