Notes & Reviews:

The music on this disc sounds like a sonic allegory on transience and futility, just like elapsing time or dwindling vitality. The "festive baroque" on these recordings demonstrates a delicate sensorium for the downside of earthly pleasures. It is inspired by the vanity of vanities.

Radek Baborák, who was principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic from 2003 to 2010, plays with the Berliner Barock Solisten, a group founded in 1995 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic. The performances are superb, the music is a joy to listen to, and you get to hear a horn player who is without question among the top ranking few on the planet.... read more ...

Zelenka offers the opener here. Zelenka's Capriccio No. 3 in F, for two oboes, two horns, bassoon, strings, and continuo, has been recorded a number of times, usually in complete sets of the his orchestral music. Most of the Telemann works have also appeared before: a Concerto in D for horn, strings, and continuo, another in D for two horns, and one in E-flat for two horns and two violins. Programs of Telemann's concertos and suites are becoming quite common. This ensemble consists of 16 players, including the shifting soloists, and they are a truly lively bunch. These performances crackle with vitality, commitment, and consummate skill. And, for all the enthusiasm, there is also room for subtleties where called for. The sound is remarkably realistic and full-blooded. If you want a Telemann starter program (with Zelenka as a bonus), this is a good choice.
