Notes & Reviews:
The Renaissance Period was a vibrant time when knowledge and fine arts flourished. In this beautiful 2-CD set, EMI Classics presents a collection of works from some of most popular renaissance composers. From Palestrina to Monteverdi and Gabrieli to Allegri, these composers' ground-shaking, mold-breaking musical ideas have changed the world of classical music as we know today. Included in the collection is Missa Papae Marcelli by Giovannie Pierluigi da Palestrina. Best known as the Pope Marcellus Mass, the mass is not only Palestrina's most well-known work but also the most often-performed. Also found in the set is the haunting Miserere by Gregorio Allegri. Miserere is one of the most often-recorded examples of Renaissance music. This recording is performed by the Choir of King's College under the direction of Stephen Cleobury and features Timothy Beasley-Murray as the treble solo.
The Independent
[The Allegri] is one of the highlights, the 1970 recording by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge achieving an almost weightless sublimity, particularly in the Sanctus. The Taverner Consort of the 1980s offers similarly impressive interpretations of Giovanni Gabrieli's polychoral pieces
