Notes & Reviews:

Job ter Haar and Vaughan Schlepp play the great sonatas for piano and cello of the two friends Alkan and Chopin.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
This performance is remarkable for its early-music character. The cellist plays very well, but he uses vibrato so seldom and so narrowly that it sounds like a viola da gamba with frets. But Chopin, in particular, writes his sonata like a vocal work where the cello must stand out against the piano like an opera singer - with vibrato. The interpretation of both works is fine, but the absence of vibrato makes the whole thing feel like a tightrope walk. I return to the more normal and just as dramatic performance of Alban Gerhardt and Steven Osborne with aural relief (Hyperion 67624, Jan/Feb 2009). That recording is an effective blend of virtuosity and passion. A more recent recording is by Tatjana Vassiljeva and Jean-Frederic Neuburger (Mirare 107, July/Aug 2010). That may be the recording that made Haar decides to go for no vibrato, since Vassiljeva uses a great deal of it, though expressively. Hers is a passionate performance of both works.
