Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, July / August 2012
The Sextet is given a very assured and energetic reading, its warmth heightened by the ensemble's historical instruments together with Mendelssohn's low strings writing (violin, two violas, cello, and bass). Bart van Oort's fortepiano playing maintains wonderful clarity and brilliance without any of the metallic brightness of some modern instruments. These musicians admirably save up their dynamics for the climactic moment in the finale where Mendelssohn introduces the Dminor minuet of III into the extended coda. Mendelssohn can here be heard moving towards the full-bodied chamber writing of the Octet composed the following year.
