Notes & Reviews:

Mercury Living Presence is special in many ways - an American company, from the heyday of classical recording in the U.S. that reproduced some of the most sonically realistic recordings at the dawn of the stereo era. Precious few stereo LPs were pressed when these recordings were issued, and they became some of the rarest, most collectible classical discs ever. Mercury Living Presence continues to enjoy a special reputation as one of the most enterprising, prestigious and sonically-spectacular labels in the history of classical recording.

Some of these recordings have previously been available on CD and on SACD; however, many are now deleted and only available second-hand or through auction-sellers at premium prices. This 50-album boxed set (plus bonus interview CD with Wilma Cozart Fine, Mercury's producer) affords collectors an opportunity to acquire 50 classic recordings at a terrific price, in a box which may well become collectible itself.

Customer Review
A really enjoyable set. Most of the recordings were very advanced for the time and still sound great today. In fact, there are many recordings that I feel are better recorded and engineered than contemporary recordings. There are some rare and desireable performances, too, that are no longer available on CD and may be hard or impossible to find on LP. I've spent many enjoyable hours listening, making it a real bargain to buy.

Customer Review
I am extremely pleased with this set in every way, starting with the sound quality. These recordings date from the golden age of audio, from about 1951 to 1964, before the advent of solid state circuitry, digital recording, and small microphones. Recordings were made on huge reel to reels decks, on vacuum tube consoles, using three (or sometimes two) strategically placed tube mikes. The sound has an enthralling lushness that simply no longer can be reproduced today. Yes, there is a little tape hiss, but it is never obnoxious, and most importantly, the music is still there in all its lush glory. As far as content, I am happy with most of the selections and think that they were well chosen. Plus, even if I only liked half of them (and I like much more than that), the price would still be a bargain on a per disc basis. So definitely, I am happy with this set, and I think most classical music lovers, as well as anyone who likes great sound quality, will like it just as much as me.

Notes & Reviews:

Includes work(s) by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky (Composer).

Reviews

Basically Dorati & Skrowaczewski
If you would like to hear most of the recordings of Antal Dorati and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, this is a great set. The Living Presence Series was sonically impeccable, though to my ear the great London/Decca Records were consistently better. This is not the complete catalogue. Some great Hanson performances are not listed, and I believe there were more Paray treasures. I suggest you check the availability of these titles with the remasters produced by Andrew Rose, Ward Marston and Mark Obert-thorn. They are even better than the originals, given digital rather than analog sound.
