Violaine Cochard (Harpsichord)
Notes & Reviews:
On this disc from Agogique, harpsichordist Violaine Cochard plays a selection of works by Johann Sebastian Bach including movements from the Suites as well as smaller, standalone works. The artist's intention was to create a 'recital' that is both diverse and coherent, including examples of the various writing processes and genres of which Bach was particularly found, such as traditional counterpoint, fantasias and dances. The recording's inspiration was an instrument - an original eighteenth century harpsichord made by the great maker Joannes Daniel Dulcken. The unique timbre, brilliance and refinement that are hallmarks of Dulcken's instruments impart their own special flavor to Bach's timeless music.
American Record Guide, July / August 2012
Cochard is an accomplished and musically inspired performer with a wide range: the Adagio in D minor (S 964) unfolds with great freedom, sometimes approaching the spontaneity of an unmeasured prelude. Her performance of the D-minor Toccata is another highlight: it has the sudden fits and starts that fit its stylus phantasticus roots. Cochard adds immeasurably to the instrument's sound with her elegant articulation and artful staggering in the toccata's first slow movement. The second slow movement includes seemingly endless repetitions of the same figure (and reminds me very much of Buxtehude). In performance, it often gives the impression that it's one of Bach's more colossal compositional gaffes; here, however, it sounds lovely because Cochard varies the arpeggiation of the accompanying chords to produce the maximum possible variety. She also has a flair for genuine cantabile playing (Prelude in G, S 902 with its fughetta, which also appears, varied, in WTC II), and her deliciously languorous performances of the G-minor and E-flat-major sinfonias are unusually sophisticated. To top things off, her reading of the A-minor Fantasy (S 922) is the best I've heard since Blandine Verlet's on AstrTe (May/June 1996 - alas, deleted). A superior release.
