Notes & Reviews:

Russian classical music seems to have a dual consciousness: sometimes grave and introspective, sometimes luminous and resolutely forward looking. At root, this sentiment draws on the many traditions of the biggest country in the world and on its special relationship with Western Europe (especially France) from the 18th century onwards. The three compositional "Treasures of Russia" featured on this specially-priced set explore the principal influences on music of their time - Orthodox religion, a quest for modernity and the intense emotion and suffering of the Russian soul. Rachmaninov's Vespers are performed by Paul Hillier, while Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is performed in the original piano version by Brigitte Engerer. The tortured soul of Russia is encapsulated in Tchaikovsky's Pathétique, performed by Daniele Gatti.
