British composer John Ramsay (b. 1931) served as a professor at the Imperial College, the University of Leeds and the University of Zürich. He was one of the principal organizers of the University of London Orchestra. This recording introduces his complete string quartets.

The Fitzwilliam Quartet plays this music with more energy and commitment than polished ensemble or tonal sheen. Sonics are full and warm but somewhat lacking in clarity and detail.
